The Country: The People's Republic of Bangladesh.

History: Bangladesh, (formerly East Pakistan) became independent in 1971 through a nine-month long war of liberation.Its fertile alluvial soil and sub-tropical climate had offered easier livelihood and attracted different races from far and wide for settlement here over the millennia. Bangladesh is a democratic country and pursuing well orchestrated
economic goals for consolidating its socio-economic base. 

Geographical Location, Topography & Climate: In South Asia; between 20° 34' and 26° 38' northern latitude and between 88° 1' and 92° 41' eastern longitude; plain fertile alluvial land in sub-tropical monsoonal climate.

Area: 147,570 square km.

Capital City: Dhaka.

Standard Time: GMT +6 hours.

Population: 129.25 million; 834 persons / sq.km. (2001 Census)

Literacy rate: 62% (2001 P)

Language : Bangla is the sole vernacular; local dialects are sparsely spoken. English is widely used.

Major crops: Rice, wheat, jute, tea, tobacco and sugarcane.

Major Rivers: Padma, Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Meghna, Karnaphuli, Teesta etc.

Mineral resources : Natural gas, limestone, hard rock, coal, lignite, silica sand, white clay, radio-active sand, etc.There is a strong possibility of oil deposit.

Non-traditional Export Items: Garments, frozen shrimps, other fish products, leather & leather goods, software, naptha, fertilizer(urea), ceramics, melamine, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products etc.
